Yorkshire Terriers, affectionately known as "Yorkies," offer big personalities in a small package. Though members of the Toy Group, they are terriers by nature and are brave, determined, investigative and energetic. Named for the English county from which they originally hail, Yorkshire Terriers were used in the nineteenth century to catch rats in clothing mills.

Tea Cup/Toy -Truth Matters
The AKC standard for the Yorkshire Terrier used to state that the adult dog should weigh between 4 and 9 pounds. Breeders could produce a 2 pound puppy and it would cause quite a stir. Suddenly, the pup would be declared a 'teacup' and often would be sold for a higher price. Sadly, this was at the expense of the dog's health. An average, healthy sized Yorkie will be between 3 and 7 lbs. (1.36 kg and 3.17 kg).
I have a lot of buyers call looking for a "Teacup" yorkie. In order to help minimize the confusion, I would like to clear up that there is no such thing as a teacup yorkie, but there are some yorkies that are smaller than others. The standard Yorkshire Terrier weighs 4-7 pounds full grown, but occasionally there are puppies which fall below these standards, and they are often referred to as "Teacup Yorkies". Normally that is just a slang term used by breeders to sell puppies. Once again I will state, I breed STANDARD AKC YORKSHIRE TERRIER puppies, with an occasional smaller one.
